Abstract

Summary: Two distinct clinical varieties (the membranous and the necrotizing types) of severe pharyngitis in 56 children are described. While both varieties had many symptoms in common, the membranous variety was associated with pharyngeal membrane and signs of laryngeal obstruction, both of which were absent in the necrotizing variety, the distinctive features of which were necrosis and ulceration of the pharyngeal tissues. There was a high incidence of malnutrition among the two groups of patients.
