Socio-economic and Psychological Implications of Congenital Malformations of the Heart and Great Vessels in Children
Abstract
Summary: A study of the socio-economic status of 102 children with congenital malformations of the heart, aged between nine months and twelve years, has revealed that the patients represent a cross-section of the socio-economic groups in Nigeria. A majority however, belong to the low socio-economic group. Conscquently, the child's illness had serious financial impact on most of the families. Apprehension of early death, feeling of guilt, acceptance and fears were some of the parental attitudes towards the child's illness. Suggestions are made on measures to reduce the financial burden on affected families.
